Tempo Report: AI Agents to Define the Future of Project Delivery

Tempo Software’s 2026 State of AI in Portfolio Management Report finds that production agents and prescriptive tools will define the future of project delivery success, transparency of AI ROI

Enterprises have embraced AI, but access to and increased usage of AI tools are not yet translating into better project delivery. New research from Tempo Software finds that the delivery performance begins to diverge when organizations move beyond pilots and productivity tools to deploy AI agents that perform real delivery work.

Tempo’s 2026 State of AI in Portfolio Management report found that although 91% of respondents said their organizations are piloting or actively using AI in project delivery, only 33% currently delegate work such as coding, documentation, or quality assurance to AI agents.

Organizations with agents in production report faster delivery: 71% of their projects finish within six months, compared with 55% at organizations without deployed agents, even when teams are managing more than 50 projects at the same time.

“The results show that using AI is not, by itself, an advantage,”said Vic Chynoweth, CEO of Tempo Software. “What matters is whether organizations can put agents to work, and govern that work alongside their people, investments and strategic priorities.”

AI deployment creates new governance demands

Putting agents into production gives enterprises a new workforce to measure and manage. Yet 39% of leaders cannot distinguish AI-produced work from human work in their current tools, and 22% of teams with production agents still cannot see AI ROI. Tempo recently introduced Workforce Intelligence to provide that attribution layer, helping organizations connect human and AI activity to work and outcomes.

Advanced AI capabilities remain rare

Only 18 of the 300 organizations surveyed have deployed production agents and have all seven operational capabilities examined in the report, spanning resource management, planning and scenario modeling, forecasting, reports and dashboards, risk detection, prioritization of work, and autonomous project management. The typical project for an AI-enabled organization runs approximately three and a half months, compared with nearly six months across the full sample.

Portfolio leaders want answers, not alerts

Only 30% of leaders have a tool that effectively connects strategic planning to work execution. Meanwhile, 83% expect an AI-ready portfolio platform to recommend how to correct strategic drift, not simply flag it.

Together, the findings point to the need for Intelligent Portfolio Orchestration, a new operating model for portfolio management in a blended workforce. Intelligent Portfolio Orchestration is the continuous coordination of strategy, investment, and execution, with the ability to recommend course corrections across human-agentic workforces.
