Viam has announced a strategic partnership with Universal Robots to integrate the UR Series collaborative robots into its AI-driven automation platform, targeting both manufacturing and marine sectors. The collaboration brings together Viam’s intelligent software layer with UR’s reliable cobot hardware to deliver a robotic surfacing solution that accelerates production, improves precision, and tackles labor shortages. In marine manufacturing, the system enables autonomous fiberglass block sanding—an otherwise labor-intensive process—adapting seamlessly to varying component sizes thanks to Viam’s hardware-agnostic architecture.

Beyond sanding, the partnership extends to applications such as gelcoat and paint application, wood sanding, and polishing, empowering a wide array of industries including furniture, construction, and industrial manufacturing. Viam’s solution is making its European debut at METSTRADE 2025, while having already been showcased at IBEX 2025. With Viam’s robotics labs in New York and Italy and its platform capable of running across a broad range of robot hardware, the partnership is designed to drive global scale of intelligent, AI-powered automation.
