The industry’s first significant foray into autonomous shopping took place when the AI shopping solutions start-up community and the data company and consumer intelligence leader NielsenIQ (NIQ) joined forces. The ODAS alliance was revealed in October 2026 with a mission to innovate agentic commerce The new age of autonomous shopping, where AI agents will research, compare and conduct all transactions on behalf of the shopper.
This partnership combines Gemini for business, Google Cloud and Google’s search ecosystem together with NIQ’s Commerce Intelligence engine, which measures retail store data and more than 250 million products in 90 countries. NIQ will also embed Google’s open-source marketing mix modeling (MMM) framework called Meridian into the Cadence platform to provide brands with closed-loop measurement.
The two companies are together building the foundational data infrastructure necessary for AI-led shopping to work effectively at scale.
The Anatomy of the Deal
The partnership focuses on three foundational pillars:
1. Commerce Innovation & Product Availability: AI agents are unable to complete a successful recommend or purchase of products without deterministic inventory accuracy. NIQ’s Product & Store Intelligence data, combined with Google’s Shopping Graph gives Google’s AI agents actual- time local online and in-store inventory, price and product attribute information.
2. Measurement and ROI via Meridian: NIQ is building Google’s Meridian MMM framework into our AI-native Cadence measurement platform that connects point of sale at physical stores with digital touch points to offer brands an “always-on” place to continuously test and optimize marketing dollars.
3. Enterprise AI Modernization: NIQ is expanding its internal deployment of Google Cloud and Gemini to automate workflows, speed up data ingestion, and deliver insights faster throughout its global business.

Transforming the Retail & E-Commerce Industry
In retail and ecommerce, agentic commerce represents the most significant shift in behavior since commerce shifted from desktop web stores to mobile apps. Search engines and marketplaces have always been a “discovery directory” for human eyeballs. In an agentic world, software agents become the intermediary, culling choices and placing orders. The agent software might place the order based on price caps, dietary restrictions, or delivery time.
This structural change impacts the industry operations in three ways:
- On a typical digital shelf, stunning high-res banners, gorgeous photography and compelling promotional copy sell the product. For autonomous agents, plain structured data takes precedence. If an agent cannot confirm a GTIN, a SKU-level inventory position, or precise ingredient information, it will go to another Product ID with a clear attribute set.
- For decades online search has often let consumers down with an out of stock local shelf. Embedding NIQ’s network of 90 countries into Google’s universe lessens the disconnect between the local brick-and-mortar shelf and the digital agent. A shopper telling AI, “locate and buy this in the vicinity for pickup in 2 hours” turns into a real is it possible?
- One source of truth, omnichannel marketing ROI In a cookie-depleted world, measuring the effectiveness of digital ad impressions toward offline purchase activity has proven to be a challenge for marketers. We brought together the native integration of Google Meridian and NIQ Cadence to power a comprehensive solution connecting online intent cues to real-world register activity.
Strategic Impact for Business
In this agentic age, brands, DTCs, and multi-brand merchants need to update their operational playbook:
- Thin and stale product feeds pose an immediate risk. Merchant Center catalogs, schema markup, and structured data feeds of inventory products need to be verified for accuracy and kept fresh at all times.
- Embrace Machine-First Brand Discovery SEO has largely pivoted to AI Optimization (AIO). To snag the machine’s recommendation, you need concise benefits and value propositions, transparent and simple pricing, validated reviews, and high fulfilment reliability scorecards.
- Last-click attribution is dead. As retail data flows seamlessly into models such as Meridian, brands will need to move on to statistical, location-based testing (GeoX) to prove digital media investments are delivering net-new incremental sales to both digital and physical channels.
This is one of the reasons we see great innovation in automating the data feeds of modern enterprise. Many companies and partnerships, like NIQ and Google, demonstrate that autonomous commerce is no longer a far off frontier. The future is now.
