River AI, an emerging leader in the artificial intelligence sector, has officially announced the successful closure of a $1.1 billion funding round, encompassing both Series Seed and Series A stages. The investment was spearheaded by General Catalyst and AMP PBC, with significant strategic backing from industry giants NVIDIA and AMD Ventures, alongside participation from Y Combinator and Temasek.
This substantial capital infusion is set to accelerate the company’s core mission: democratizing powerful, personal AI by providing developers and enterprises with the necessary infrastructure to train, tune, and retain ownership of their proprietary models.
Bridging the Gap in Enterprise AI
In the current technological landscape, most organizations rely on general-purpose AI models trained on broad internet datasets. While these models offer baseline capabilities, they often fail to address the specific, nuanced needs of individual enterprises. Historically, developing a custom model necessitated high-level expertise, specialized hardware, and significant time investments barriers that have rendered sophisticated, tailored AI inaccessible to the vast majority of companies.
River AI is fundamentally shifting this paradigm. By lowering the barrier to entry, the company’s flagship River API enables enterprises to execute complex reinforcement learning runs in as little as 15 to 20 minutes without the need for a dedicated infrastructure team. Furthermore, the platform offers a compelling financial proposition, providing two to four times the cost savings compared to closed-source alternatives.

Streamlining Model Development
River AI’s platform simplifies the underlying complexities of AI development, including fast weight transfers, sampling-training consistency, and elastic compute. This allows developers to prioritize model optimization over infrastructure management. By facilitating state-of-the-art LoRA fine-tuning and reinforcement learning for frontier open-weight models, River AI ensures that teams can deploy trained models to production instantly. Additionally, the platform’s billing model strictly metered on training and inference tokens eliminates the inefficiency of idle GPU capacity costs.
Reflecting on the need for a paradigm shift in the industry, Marc Bhargava, Managing Director at General Catalyst, stated:
“There is a gap between what AI can do and what most companies actually experience. Until now, companies have lacked a cost-efficient way to train, tune, and own custom AI models. River closes this gap, helping any company build models on their own data, tailored to how they actually work.”
A New Era of AI Ownership
Looking beyond the current API capabilities, River AI is committed to building a comprehensive, full-stack ecosystem. This includes accessible training infrastructure, products focused on continual learning, and innovative hardware designed to bring personal AI closer to the user, effectively bypassing the constraints of centralized data centers.
Hemant Taneja, CEO of General Catalyst, emphasized the strategic importance of River AI’s approach:
“American leadership in AI urgently requires leadership in open-weight models, while maintaining a lead in closed frontier models. Igor and the River AI team have the experience to make this happen, and we view their agenda as a priority for American resilience. The core philosophy of putting ownership of intelligence in the hands of the people using it will prove to be on the right side of history for the open-weight ecosystem.”
River AI’s leadership team, which draws deep expertise from xAI, Tesla, and Google DeepMind, is uniquely positioned to execute this ambitious vision. Igor Babuschkin, Co-Founder and CEO of River AI, noted the company’s commitment to user-centric intelligence:
“The way AI is built today is not how it will be built in the future. AI should be open, freely available, and affordable. It should feel like it is working for the person using it, not the lab that trained it. We started River to allow people and companies to own their intelligence.”
With this new round of funding, River AI is poised to scale its operations and continue building tools that empower individuals and organizations to harness the full potential of AI on their own terms.
