Advertising in ChatGPT is being tested by OpenAI for the first time, a big change in how they make money, as the company aims to add other revenue sources apart from subscriptions and enterprise offers. The experimental program, which is gradually made available to adult users who are logged in and reside in the US under the Free and Go plans, brings in sponsored items that are clearly marked and shown separately from AI-generated responses. OpenAI stressed that ads won’t change how ChatGPT answers, and that the user’s conversations or personal information will not be given to advertisers. The company is taking steps to protect consumer trust, maintain transparency, and also the overall success of the platform as they carry out the project. Besides that, the release states that from the early stages of testing, ad rejection rates have been kept low and there hasn’t been any detectable drop in user trust metrics.

As part of the wider advertising growth, OpenAI is adding new ad campaign management features, including allowing advertisers to run their ads themselves, and offering cost-per-click (CPC) pricing models, so that brands and agencies can handle their campaigns in a more convenient way. Many large advertising and technology companies, such as Adobe, have been partnering with OpenAI to investigate the potential of contextual and conversational advertisements in ChatGPT. Industry experts argue that by doing so, OpenAI will be stepping into the shoes of some of the world’s most powerful digital advertising companies like Google and Meta at the same time introducing a novel marketing tool in the form of conversational AI. According to various media reports, OpenAI predicts that its advertising business will generate billions of dollars in the upcoming years as it is investing billions of dollars in the development of AI infrastructure and its products. While the potential success of this business strategy is promising for the company, marketers and customers are equally divided about the potential for advertisements to co-exist alongside the use of AI. It should be noted, however, that OpenAI claims to be strictly adhering to guidelines regarding privacy, relevancy, and control over its ads pilot.
