IBM has officially launched the AI Builders Challenge, a global initiative utilizing IBM Bob the company’s advanced, AI-powered development partner to bridge the critical AI skills gap for university students entering an evolving workforce. Announced during IBM’s Future of AI in Higher Education Summit in New York, the challenge coincides with an expansive rollout providing free access to IBM Bob across 20,000 post-secondary institutions globally. Administered via IBM SkillsBuild, the competition tasks students with solving real-world development problems across diverse themes like space exploration and intelligent work systems, utilizing a tool that coordinates the entire software lifecycle.

This hands-on program tackles data revealing that 63% of faculty think grads are ill-equipped for generative AI in the workplace. Justina Nixon-Saintil, IBM’s VP and Chief Impact Officer, emphasizes its critical importance. She says, “AI is integral to how work is done, and new hires must know how to use it well and responsibly.” That means knowing how to question what an AI tool produces, explain the decisions made behind their work and take ownership of the output. The AI Builders Challenge gives university students practical experience building AI skills with IBM Bob, while helping them create portfolio-ready projects that show employers they are prepared for an AI-driven economy.” Running through July and August, the challenge features a $15,000 prize pool, a Grand Prize trip to IBM TechXchange, and essential networking opportunities, moving academia toward genuine AI fluency.
