Continuing a partnership that has already transformed the field of generative AI, Amazon and Anthropic have made an important announcement regarding the expansion of their partnership. The new chapter will be marked by a fresh investment from Amazon and a ten-year dedication to using AWS infrastructure for building superior AI systems.
The extended agreement includes Amazon’s investment of $5 billion in Anthropic immediately, with the possibility of another $20 billion in the future. The deal is based on the companies’ common belief in making top-tier and secure artificial intelligence available to all businesses. At the same time, Anthropic plans to spend more than $100 billion in the next decade on AWS services used for training their cutting-edge AI models, such as the popular Claude series.
Scaling the Future of AI Infrastructure
A cornerstone of this renewed collaboration is the massive scaling of compute capacity. Anthropic will secure up to 5 gigawatts (GW) of capacity on AWS to support its intensive research and deployment needs. This includes extensive use of Amazon’s custom-designed AI silicon, specifically the Trainium and Inferentia chips.
The partnership also highlights “Project Rainier,” a joint effort to build one of the world’s largest AI compute clusters. By utilizing over one million Trainium2 chips, the two companies are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in large-scale model training, ensuring that AWS customers continue to receive the most efficient and powerful AI solutions available.
“Our custom AI silicon offers high performance at significantly lower cost for customers, which is why it’s in such hot demand,” said Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon. “Anthropic’s commitment to run its large language models on AWS Trainium for the next decade reflects the progress we’ve made together on our custom silicon, and will help more customers get their generative AI applications into production more quickly and cost-effectively.”

Democratizing Enterprise AI
Since the collaboration has started in 2023, the adoption rate has surged. Currently, more than 100,000 users are using Anthropic’s Claude models on Amazon Bedrock. Through this expansion, AWS continues to remain the leading provider of cloud and training services for Anthropic, offering developers an integrated space to develop their generative AI models.
Through this increased integration, there will be increased opportunities for customization, where organizations can customize the Claude models based on their proprietary data sets within the high-security standards offered by AWS.
“Our users tell us Claude is increasingly essential to how they work, and we need to build the infrastructure to keep pace with rapidly growing demand,” said Dario Amodei, co-founder and CEO of Anthropic. “Our collaboration with Amazon will allow us to continue advancing AI research while delivering Claude to our customers, including the more than 100,000 building on AWS.”
Commitment to Safety and Responsible Growth
In this regard, Amazon will retain its ownership as a minority shareholder in Anthropic. However, both companies remain committed to the development of AI responsibly and continue their participation in worldwide efforts in promoting safety through bodies such as NIST and PAI.
The formation of this collaboration is a significant step for Amazon and Anthropic as it ensures that the two companies are ahead of other firms in exploiting the possibilities of the AI age.
