Rune Labs, a precision neurology software and data company, announced a major milestone in accelerating care management for people with Parkinson’s disease and their care support teams. As part of the StrivePD app, Rune has introduced new StrivePD-AI, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) clinical reports that provide a comprehensive, monthly outlook of disease progression along with personalized educational content to help patients, caregivers, and clinicians improve outcomes and optimize care.

“The unfortunate reality is there is a structural shortage of specialists who can treat Parkinson’s, and the problem is getting worse. Most Parkinson’s patients struggle to get adequate access to care. There is huge potential in GenAI and Large Language Models to address these challenges and empower patients to take more care into their own hands, assisting in making better use of data, correlating symptoms, and communicating complex information in a user-friendly manner,” said Rune Labs CEO Brian Pepin. “We’re building StrivePD as a best-in-class care companion for Parkinson’s, and these new clinical reports will help inform patients in between clinician visits with personalized insights and up-to-date symptom trends.”

Rune’s GenAI algorithms combine Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet Large Language Model (LLM) with Rune Lab’s clinical guide rails and curated coaching content. Multimodal data includes patient-reported outcomes such as symptoms or medication side effects, activities recorded by Apple Fitness or logged on StrivePD like walking, yoga, and stretching, and free text notes recorded by the patient including blood pressure recordings, sleep logs, and mood changes. Based on the patient’s StrivePD data, the model also utilizes GenAI capabilities to aggregate relevant information, such as common medication prescription practices and side effects, mitigation of falls, cognitive and sleeping symptoms, and educational materials from the highest credible Parkinson’s sources.

“StrivePD has been instrumental in allowing me to take a proactive approach to my care. These new reports provide me with information that is succinct, yet comprehensive that I can share with my healthcare team. I have already been able to show my report to my provider who was able to adjust my medication regimen and timing based on the data, decreasing the severity of my tremors during the day,” said Kevin, a StrivePD user based in Florida.

Each month, StrivePD-AI generates a detailed, HIPAA-compliant clinical report that is sent to the patient by email. The report uses a motivational framework to meet patients where they are, offering encouragement to continue logging experiences and informing their doctor about high-risk events such as falls or balance issues. The clinical report includes a comprehensive summary of notes, medication compliance, exercise logs, and symptom fluctuations to help guide discussions and compare longitudinally during clinician appointments.

Personalized coaching content includes:

  • Best practices for improving functional movements and maintaining mobility
  • Strategies to reduce falling risk
  • Recommendations of exercises that promote large amplitude movements, faster movement initiation, and transitions from rigidity and slowness
  • Tips for enhancing non-motor symptoms such as mood and sleep

“As a caregiver, I get excited whenever new technologies emerge that can shed light on my wife’s Parkinson’s. These clinical reports provide us with a monthly summary into her well-being, allowing us to track her progress, assess the effectiveness of her medication, and share invaluable insights with our care team. This isn’t just about data—it’s about empowering us to make informed decisions that can enhance her quality of life,” remarked Dennis Tinley, a Parkinson’s caregiver.

Rune Labs‘ user-centric clinical AI framework and comprehensive governance programs are crafted to safeguard users and their data. This approach helps build trust and confidence across the StrivePD community by prioritizing alignment around principles of transparency, privacy and compliance, enhanced by internal controls and regulatory criteria.
