SAP to Acquire Dremio to Accelerate Agentic AI with Unified Data Platform

SAP SE has revealed that it plans to buy Dremio as part of a move to boost its enterprise AI functionalities by integrating SAP and non-SAP data environments. The acquisition is set to improve SAP’s Business Data Cloud, helping companies to effortlessly integrate, analyze, and act on data from various ecosystems in real time.

Through this acquisition, SAP reaffirms its mission of overhauling and simplifying enterprise data ecosystems while tackling fragmentation issues that have hampered AI adoption. By adding Dremio’s open data lakehouse platform, SAP anticipates providing a unified, high-performance base for both analytics and AI workloads that will lead to quicker access to well-governed and AI-ready data.

Dremio’s platform is centered around an open and scalable framework that enables businesses to access data right where it is stored without having to move or replicate the data extensively. This feature perfectly suits SAP’s move to evolve its Business Data Cloud into an Apache Iceberg-native lakehouse, which will allow enterprises to integrate both SAP and non-SAP data sources on one platform.

“Enterprise AI doesn’t stall because the models aren’t good enough; it stalls because the data isn’t ready for AI agents,” said Philipp Herzig, CTO, SAP SE. “ Dremio eliminates that bottleneck. Combined with SAP Business Data Cloud, we can now take customers from raw, fragmented data to governed, AI-ready intelligence on a single open platform.”

This integration is expected to transform SAP Business Data Cloud into a stronger, more open ecosystem that will enable federated analytics across enterprise data sources. A universal data catalog based on open standards will also be part of the platform, offering a unified layer for metadata, governance, and semantic understanding. This move is aimed at making data more accessible while ensuring tight control over data lineage and security.

Dremio’s serverless and elastic architecture is another major benefit of their platform. It lets businesses change their computation resources dynamically according to the demand. This not only improves the performance during high workload times but also helps in reducing costs as no fixed infrastructure needs to be set up. Consequently, enterprises can get more value out of their large-scale analytics and AI projects.

The purchase of the company also confirms SAP’s dedication towards open-source solutions such as Apache Iceberg, Apache Polaris, and Apache Arrow. Continuously backing these projects, SAP is not only becoming an important part of the open data ecosystem but also enabling better interoperability between different cloud platforms and data environments.

From a strategic perspective, this action is part of SAP’s long-term plan of investment in the development of a full-fledged enterprise AI stack. The firm has been acquiring firms to expand its data and AI line of products and through these acquisitions it aims at creating a unified platform that combines data management, analytics and AI-powered decision-making.

The deal, which financial terms have not been revealed, is dependent on regulatory approvals and expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2026.

After the deal is done, the bringing together of Dremio and SAP‘s systems is expected to greatly improve the company’s potential to provide complete AI solutions. By connecting the disjointed sources of data with intelligent automation, SAP is setting itself up to assist businesses in gaining more benefits from their data while at the same time promoting the use of agentic AI in various sectors.
