Dutch quantum-safe communications innovator CUbIQ Technologies and photonics leader Coherent Corp. have announced a successful proof-of-concept (POC) quantum key distribution (QKD) demonstrator. Intended for providing physical-layer security for an increasing number of artificial intelligence networks, the innovation does not necessitate changes in the current infrastructure and can be easily implemented within it. This innovation will be presented at ECOC 2026 in Málaga, Spain.
Addressing the AI Fabric Security Gap
As artificial intelligence workloads grow beyond single facility limits, back-end network fabrics increasingly rely on inter-campus optical fiber links. These connections transmit high-value intellectual property, including model weights, gradients, and training data. While traditional line-rate encryption secures traffic in transit, conventional key-exchange protocols cannot detect whether an optical link has been intercepted.
CUbIQ addresses this vulnerability at the physical layer. By deriving cryptographic keys directly from the quantum properties of optical signals, the technology ensures that any interception attempt leaves a detectable signal footprint. Suspect keys are identified and discarded before encryption takes place. Unlike legacy QKD implementations that require space- and power-intensive rack-mounted hardware, CUbIQ delivers this capability within standard optical form factors.

Proof-of-Concept Integration Details
The joint proof-of-concept features CUbIQ’s Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution (CV-QKD) transceiver packaged in a standard QSFP-28 pluggable form factor. Operating within a zero-trust architecture, the system combines CUbIQ’s pluggable QKD module over DWDM alongside Coherent Corp.’s high-performance 200G FR4 OSFP56 optical transceivers.
During testing, the architecture was evaluated using a commercially available NVIDIA DGX Spark host system via its ConnectX-7 interface. The demonstration verified physical-layer protection on live hardware without requiring modifications to the host infrastructure.
By utilizing standard transceiver ports, the integrated approach minimizes operational overhead. Compared to traditional rack-based QKD systems, the pluggable form factor reduces power consumption, capital costs, and physical footprint by a factor of 100.
“CUbIQ’s mission is to show practical, accessible physical layer security that can extend across AI infrastructure,” said Aaron Albores Mejia, CEO of CUbIQ Technologies. “This work with Coherent Corp. proves that quantum-safe networking can be demonstrated on the AI infrastructure that operators are already deploying.”
Future Outlook and ECOC 2026 Demonstration
The collaboration highlights how quantum-safe security can scale alongside multi-site datacenter architectures. CUbIQ and Coherent Corp. are continuing joint development toward next-generation secure, high-capacity optical pluggable transceivers.
