Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has set a new bar in the next-generation mobile memory space by releasing the industry’s fastest UFS 5.0 solution, aimed at facilitating smooth and efficient local AI services. Utilizing the latest JEDEC embedded memory interface specification, this innovative solution is capable of setting an unprecedented bandwidth of up to 10.8 gigabytes per second (GB/s) for both sequential read and write of 10.8GB/s and 9.5GB/s respectively, representing a doubling in performance compared to the older UFS 4.1 version. Such a significant improvement drastically cuts down latency and response times in handling LLMs.

Furthermore, this solution not only focuses on improving speed but is also 40% more energy-efficient due to clock gating and multi-voltage technologies, greatly reducing power consumption during data transfer. Moreover, Samsung has packed this revolutionary memory in a highly compact package of 7.5mm x 13mm x 0.9mm that is 16.7% smaller than its previous counterpart. “In the era of on-device AI, storage devices are evolving into a key driver defining AI experiences,” said Jangseok Choi, head of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics. “As we successfully move beyond the development stage of the industry’s first UFS 5.0 solution, Samsung is setting a new standard for storage on the go and will continue to drive innovation for the next-generation mobile platform market.” Mass production for varying capacities up to 1TB is scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of this year.
