OpenAI has unveiled a new Request for Proposals (RFP) aimed at bolstering the United States’ AI supply chain by expanding domestic manufacturing across critical hardware and infrastructure components, presenting a strategic effort to reduce dependence on foreign sources and accelerate the scaling of advanced AI systems. Building on the progress of its Stargate initiative, which has moved the company past the halfway mark toward its 10-gigawatt capacity commitment, OpenAI emphasizes that the infrastructure supporting advanced AI from data center hardware to consumer electronics and robotics inputs must be developed and produced within the U.S. to modernize industrial capabilities, create well-paid jobs, and sustain American leadership in the Intelligence Age. RFP scope has a wide reach that targets proposals for companies that are geared toward building or scaling capacity for modules, tooling, equipment, and assembly of consumer electronics; Compute, Power, Cooling, and related datacenter hardware; and critical elements of advanced robotics such as gearboxes, motors, or power electronics. OpenAI recognizes that AI Infrastructure includes areas even beyond accelerators or datacenters to include the physical environment of racks, cabling, network equipment, cooling, power, testing, or assembly capacity all of which are necessary for large-scale deployments of AI technologies. Proposals for future partnership plans and developments based on consideration of RFPs are to be submitted not later than June 2026.

The effort is being described within a theme of reindustrialization in which manufacturers throughout the U.S. are investing in high-end production capabilities in order to build out an AI ecosystem. The idea here is that through coordination of demand signals and manufacturing capacity, it will be possible for OpenAI to improve timelines and build a technological lead during a time when the infrastructure of AI will be expanding. This will help assure U.S. success in this era.
