AWS has published a detailed reference architecture for a secure, scalable platform enabling real-time patient monitoring using smart inhalers, designed for respiratory disease management like asthma and COPD, which affect over 545 million people globally. The architecture leverages AWS IoT Core for device connectivity, Amazon MSK (Kafka) for streaming ingestion, and Amazon Redshift (with streaming ingestion) to cleanse and enrich inhaler telemetry alongside patient EHRs, environmental and geolocation data. Care providers and clinicians can then query this data via Amazon QuickSight, using natural-language queries to uncover patterns such as spikes in inhaler use during high pollen days or regional adherence trends. The solution supports stringent security and compliance including end-to-end encryption, certificate-based authentication, column-level encryption, and alignment with standards like HIPAA, SOC, ISO, and GDPR.

In practice, each inhaler usage event captured via Bluetooth is transmitted securely, streamed, enriched, and analyzed near real time to produce actionable insights that help clinicians move from reactive to proactive care. For example, clinicians can ask, “Show me patients with less than 70% adherence to maintenance medication over the last 90 days,” triggering SQL generation and visualization of adherence trends across days of the week. Another use case is querying environmental trigger correlations: “Find the correlation between air quality measurements and rescue inhaler usage across different regions.” A further application: “Create a dashboard showing patients with high exacerbation risk in the next 72 hours…” which yields geographic heat maps combining risk scores, symptom trends, adherence, and exposure metrics. By merging patient behavior and environmental context, the AWS architecture empowers healthcare teams with predictive capabilities, enabling early interventions that reduce hospitalizations, lower care costs, and improve quality of life for respiratory patients worldwide.
