Today, we released a software update that includes new capabilities and features designed specifically to address the feedback of both developers and customers, and empower their visions.
Enterprise Users: Better Experiences for Key Use Cases & Workflows
The update provides value to enterprises across a range of industries and workflows. These features enhance user experience, as well as capabilities for key use cases like remote assistance in manufacturing, assessments in healthcare, or planning and design review in construction. Highlights for enterprises include:
Faster, More Accurate Hand Tracking
This update improves hand tracking to enable better, more responsive performance in the OS and your applications. Reduced latency and improved gesture classification improve pinch detection and add support for fast-moving hand tracking, with greater precision and accuracy. With this update, hand tracking is six times more accurate and 10% faster than the previous software release, based on internal testing. Users can now use hand gestures to engage and interact with digital content at 60 Hz while the Controller is inactive.
Adjustable Display Zone
With this update, we have introduced an adjustability feature to the Display Zone on Magic Leap 2 to support closer viewing of objects. The Display Zone near boundary – sometimes referred to as “the clipping plane” – is a built-in, adjustable setting that supports visual comfort by default, while enabling each person to customize for closer viewing. The near boundary of the Display Zone protects people from viewing content at close distances that can cause discomfort such as eyestrain, headache, and nausea. The default 37 cm boundary is based on extensive research by Magic Leap.
Magic Leap 2 will continue to have a suggested Display Zone near boundary as the default, but users are now able to adjust their preferred distance of the near boundary from the default of 37 cm to as close as 25 cm.
End-to-End Map Sharing and Alignment
We’re providing a more stable and reliable mapping experience on Magic Leap 2, helping users to produce higher quality maps for Localization and World Reconstruction – key for enterprise applications and digital twins.
The release builds on and refines the prototypes and designs of the previous release to include design, prototype, and test mapping flows. This improvement results in fast loading times for maps when starting a Localization session and processing requests. Stability and reliability improved so content stays in place when moving and in changing lighting conditions.
Developers also benefit from increased stability and reliability during device use with a reduction in shifting of spatial anchors in large environments.
Through a more seamless mapping experience, users can build higher quality maps for Localization and World Reconstruction across industries such as the public sector, Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) and entertainment.
Developers: Increasing Flexibility and Capabilities
Many of the features included in this update focus on empowering developers to more quickly and easily create sophisticated enterprise applications that maximize the advanced features on Magic Leap 2. Highlights for developers include:
New Debugging Tools to Troubleshoot and Optimize App Performance
We’re introducing debugging and profiling tools that provide developers with more actionable information to test and optimize their applications and setups.
These tools support faster development of more reliable, valuable, and sophisticated AR solutions for enterprise. They will enable developers and partners to self-service their app debugging on user-build secure devices. Developers will be able to run profiling tools, decipher logs, and determine if a problem exists within the application or the OS.
New Capture and Streaming Capabilities to Share AR Experiences
Effective, high-quality capture capabilities are essential for educating and winning over new audiences, creating compelling content, and maximizing enterprise value.
These new capabilities improve both first person video capture from the device and third person view via streaming (e.g. via Miracast to TV screen), enabling developers, enterprises, and end users to more easily share high-quality content from Magic Leap 2:
- Improves video stream sharing from the Magic Leap Hub.
- Improves the user experience for Capture.
- Removes artifacts in the third eye, improves opacity, and applies settings, across all third eye streams.
- Adds additional aspect ratio to support standard miracast resolutions.
Access to Magnetometer Data and Calibration
We’re expanding access to magnetometer data on Magic Leap 2. The update enables developers and users to calibrate the magnetometers within the Headset for e-compass applications like pedestrian navigation.
