Groundbreaking intelligence addresses a $1B industry problem, helping healthcare organizations streamline billing workflows and receive accurate reimbursement

DeepScribe, the ambient AI of choice for specialty and chronic care, announced automated Evaluation and Management (E/M) medical coding as the newest offering within its Ambient Operating System for clinicians. Part of DeepScribe Assist insights, E/M coding will be introduced at the 2025 HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition this week in Las Vegas, at DeepScribe booth #5422.

This highlights DeepScribe’s continued investment in revenue cycle management intelligence, adding to existing coding and compliance for ICD-10 codes and Hierarchical Condition Categories (HCCs). DeepScribe ambient AI recommends the appropriate E/M code as part of the ambient scribing process, with Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) ensuring sufficient and complete documentation.

With this full slate of coding functionality, DeepScribe can now deliver automated billing intelligence for every healthcare organization, regardless of their mix of fee-for-service and value-based care reimbursement.

“Although coding is a vital component of clinical operations, it’s hardly the reason clinicians enter the field,” said Matthew Ko, DeepScribe CEO and co-founder. “With this E/M addition, providers can devote themselves to patient care, while DeepScribe takes care of the coding and documentation seamlessly in the background.”

Key features of DeepScribe’s E/M coding functionality include:

  • Real-time E/M code selection based on the patient-clinician conversation
  • Coding knowledge embedded within the AI, for optimal coding accuracy
  • Detailed, evidence-backed documentation that supports the selected code and compliance
  • Quick reference pop-ups showing the parameters for each code generated
  • Seamless integration with EHR systems

“This is the next element of our Ambient Operating System,” continued Ko, “an ecosystem of intelligent applications and automated workflows, all tapping into ambient AI patient data. Our E/M coding can help revolutionize the billing workflow for medical groups so they can accomplish two things: stay focused on patient care and operate as efficiently as possible.”

Recent reports of inaccurate or insufficient E/M coding show the immense cost: A 2024 Medicare report reveals that the use of a single code (99214) accounted for $564 million in improper payments. Sixty-three percent of those were improperly coded, and thirty-seven percent had insufficient or no documentation. Medicare data from 2022 shows E/M coding the source of more than $1 billion in errors.

“As a physician and former practice management executive, I know how coding demands chip away at time – and sometimes, payments,” said Dean Dalili, MD, MHCM, DeepScribe Chief Medical Officer. “Our new E/M coding intelligence does more than just streamline the process. It helps safeguard against downcoding and upcoding, ensuring care organizations receive fair reimbursements while avoiding potential audits or penalties.”
