Novarad Corporation used VisAR, its augmented reality surgical navigation system, to biopsy an intraventricular brain tumor from a patient at MAC CDMX Hospital in Mexico last week pass. This surgical procedure marks the first application of augmented reality surgery in its category in Latin America, and demonstrates Novarad’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of medical science and offering patients cutting-edge treatment options at low cost.

In July, surgeons at Hospital MAC CDMX completed a successful spine surgery using VisAR navigation. Pushing the boundaries of AR navigation, VisAR was used in a much more complex and risky surgery in this case. A team of neurosurgeons, Dr. Alberto Ramírez and Dr. José Francisco Cuellar , assisted by Dr. Wendell Gibby of Novarad, used VisAR to biopsy a malignant tumor in the third ventricle, located in the center of the brain .

VisAR provides real-time, three-dimensional visualization of the patient’s anatomy. Allows precise navigation of surgical instruments with optical tracking through an attached code. This innovative system allows surgeons to overlay critical information over the surgical field, providing unmatched precision and accuracy during delicate surgeries. By improving a surgeon’s situational awareness, VisAR helps reduce the risk of complications and ensures optimal results.

Precise targeting and biopsy of intraventricular tumor are extremely complex in neurosurgery. This highlights the potential of VisAR, which uses advanced image processing software along with a Microsoft HoloLens to revolutionize healthcare delivery.

“After working on the first spine cases, we realized that the precision and safety with which we can place implants using VisAR is very good,” said Dr. Ramírez, one of the surgeons involved in the procedure. “After working on the cranial case, we found that we could smoothly and confidently guide our craniotomy margins when entering the anatomical corridor for tumor reception. I think in some ways VisAR navigation is essential. Despite a slight increase of surgical time, there is a marked improvement during surgery. We have a much better ability to see and understand brain injury. As I said in the previous spinal surgery, I think it is a revolutionary invention.”

VisAR began development about 7 years ago. It was the first AR device to receive FDA clearance for preoperative planning 5 years ago. It has evolved rapidly, achieving FDA clearance for stereotactic spinal navigation in 2022. It has been used in eight countries for a wide variety of applications, including spinal implant guidance, plastic surgery, orthopedic trauma and oncology, as well as radiology. interventionist.
