Planned acquisition strengthens NetApp’s position in the rapidly growing AI infrastructure market by bringing differentiated metadata innovation and parallel file architecture designed for AI
NetApp, an intelligent data infrastructure provider, has reached an agreement to acquire PEAK:AIO, a pioneer specializing in next-generation metadata architectures and high-performance parallel file software. The strategic transaction aims to accelerate NetApp’s AI product roadmap by merging advanced metadata capabilities and parallel namespace technologies designed to scale shared storage in tandem with rapidly expanding GPU clusters.
With artificial intelligence moving into mainstream enterprise computing, current IT departments encounter significant problems of data bottlenecks. The older generation of storage solutions cannot handle the amount of scale, concurrency, and throughput required by current AI clouds, AI manufacturing facilities, and computationally intensive environments. To address the situation, NetApp has been working on creating a decoupled architecture of data storage that will separate metadata services from the main storage capacities. This solution can provide an opportunity to create an environment that could store trillions of files and operate with exabyte capacity.
The addition of PEAK:AIO reinforces NetApp’s strategy to lead the fast-growing market for AI-centric infrastructure. Integrating PEAK:AIO’s specialized software with NetApp’s flaghip ONTAP® platform will enable enterprises to deploy a high-throughput, AI-optimized data architecture without giving up the enterprise resiliency, robust security, and operational stability of ONTAP.
“AI clouds need high-performance shared storage that can scale alongside growing GPU clusters while maintaining the resilience, security, and operational simplicity organizations depend on,” said George Kurian, Chief Executive Officer at NetApp. “With PEAK:AIO, we are delivering on our vision for a new generation of AI infrastructure that combines scalable metadata services with the proven foundation of ONTAP to help customers maximize infrastructure efficiency and support AI at hyperscale cloud.”

PEAK:AIO originally engineered its software platform in collaboration with leading academic and scientific research centers, including Los Alamos National Laboratory and Carnegie Mellon University, to address demanding high-performance computing (HPC) workflows. Incorporating these technologies into NetApp’s ONTAP ecosystem provides an evolutionary path for existing customers while delivering global namespace features and parallel NFS access to reduce data-induced GPU idle time.
“NetApp and PEAK:AIO connected through the shared belief that the AI era demands a fundamentally new approach to data infrastructure,” said Mark Klarzynski, Chief Technology Officer and Founder at PEAK:AIO. “What excites us most about joining NetApp is the opportunity to pair our culture of innovation with the reach, scale, and customer trust of a global leader. Together with NetApp, we have an opportunity to help shape that future and deliver technologies that make managing data at a massive scale both practical and accessible.”
Using the metadata scale capabilities of PEAK:AIO with the extensive enterprise reach of NetApp creates a solution that will make it easier to deploy storage for ultra-scale AI. The integrated design intends to manage multi-exabyte scale data volumes and trillions of files.
This acquisition is contingent on customary closing conditions and required regulatory clearances.
