Couchbase is the developer data platform for critical applications in AI-driven environments. It announced major upgrades to its Couchbase Mobile platform. These changes let organizations build AI-powered apps that work at the disconnected edge.

Couchbase Mobile is responding to the demand for always-on apps. It now offers JavaScript support for Couchbase Lite. This lets its embedded database work in any web browser. This provides true offline-first, browser-based web apps. It also ensures smooth data sync across web, mobile, custom hardware, and desktop environments.

Additionally, the platform’s peer-to-peer (P2P) data synchronisation capabilities have been upgraded with device auto-discovery, mesh-network support that adapts dynamically as users join or exit networks, and network auto-switching capabilities to maintain resilience in fluctuating connectivity environments. These innovations empower offline collaboration at the edge.

“Building AI-powered applications for the edge means being able to deliver fast, personalised and always-available experiences, even in completely disconnected environments. The latest enhancements to Couchbase Mobile help developers build and ship applications faster, and ensure architects provide continuous uptime no matter what,” said Matt McDonough, SVP of Product at Couchbase.

“With more than a decade of bringing mobile database innovation to production applications worldwide, these advancements provide customers with the most comprehensive mobile and edge support in the industry. And while other database vendors are deprecating their mobile support due to the inherent complexity, Couchbase is accelerating its mobile and edge capabilities to include browser-based JavaScript applications.”

Delivering Always-On Applications for Business Continuity

Organizations are using AI applications on edge devices. These devices need to work well even in areas with little or no internet connection. Cloud-only databases often struggle to provide steady performance. Meanwhile, embedded mobile databases usually lack scalable back-end integration. This adds complexity and raises costs.

A recent Forrester Research report showed that almost half of tech pros see increasing edge technology use as a top IT goal for next year. This highlights the need for reliable mobile experiences at the edge. Unified Platform Eliminates Integration Complexity and Downtime Risk.

Many organisations face a choice between cloud-centric wired databases and specialised embedded mobile databases that complicate synchronization and back-end integration.

Couchbase Mobile resolves these challenges by offering a unified platform that spans cloud, edge, device and web:

Couchbase Lite for JavaScript: Enables embedding the Couchbase Lite database in browser-based applications to eliminate internet dependencies and accelerate offline-first experiences.

Peer-to-Peer Sync Enhancements: Device auto-discovery, mesh support, and an upcoming network auto-switching feature reduce P2P implementation code to around five lines for iOS and Android a significant reduction from earlier versions.

Multi-Cluster Resilience with XDCR & Mobile Sync: Leveraging cross-data-centre replication (XDCR) for mobile deployments, Couchbase Mobile supports multi-region resilience for zero-downtime disaster recovery and seamless failover across clusters.

Edge Server for Disconnected Environments: The lightweight Couchbase Edge Server is purpose-built for resource-constrained hardware and isolated installations (airplanes, retail stores, warehouses) where internet connectivity is unreliable.

Customer Success: Aptos

Aptos, a global leader in unified commerce solutions for retailers, utilises Couchbase to power its modern, cloud-native point-of-sale (POS) technology and the Aptos ONE retail experience platform. The company emphasises the importance of always-on applications that function regardless of internet availability.

“Reliable data synchronization from cloud to retail store devices is essential for our customers, who need applications that always work, regardless of internet availability,” said John Carney, VP, Head of Architecture at Aptos. “Couchbase Mobile’s peer-to-peer replication capabilities allow us to provide the always-on experience retailers demand with low TCO. Moving to Capella delivered over $1 million in annual savings while reducing our infrastructure footprint from 12 deployments with 100+ nodes to a single deployment with 31 nodes.”
