Sumo Logic, the provider of the Intelligent Operations Platform, has announced major enhancements to its Data Pipelines capabilities. Built directly into the core platform, the upgrade extends the company’s data pipeline management functionality, allowing enterprises to manage telemetry costs and data value upstream before ingestion and storage occur.
As cloud architecture expands and agentic artificial intelligence adoption accelerates, security and operations infrastructure face record-high volumes of telemetry. Organizations often experience an operational trade-off: absorbing high ingestion fees for complete data coverage or cutting telemetry intake and risking unmanaged security blind spots. Unfiltered data streaming into analytics engines further inflates total cost of ownership (TCO) without delivering proportional analytical return.

Industry analysts have highlighted how unchecked telemetry expansion impacts modern AI tools: “Organizations typically defaulted to ingesting all of the operational data with the intention to analyze at a later date. Today’s complex environments no longer allow this to be feasible due to costs associated with ingestion and storage. Not only is there no increase in business value, but we see a decrease in value due to higher volumes of poor-quality telemetry, which inhibit the ability of generative AI (GenAI) and large language models (LLMs) that use this data.”
Shifting Data Control Upstream
Currently processing nearly seven exabytes of telemetry daily for global security and engineering teams, Sumo Logic’s upgraded Data Pipelines system introduces native pre-ingestion management. Engineering teams can now preview live telemetry, filter operational noise, convert formats, and route dataset tiers to external storage or lower-cost destinations eliminating the need to deploy third-party pipeline tools or additional vendor agents.
The updated capabilities include an AI-assisted pipeline assistant designed to simplify governance. The system automatically writes routing rules, detects schema shifts, and identifies data anomalies, while keeping enterprise administrators in full operational control.
“We’ve spent fifteen years as experts helping customers maximize the value of their telemetry, turning exabytes of noise into actionable insights that are critical to improving enterprise security and overall performance of infrastructure and applications,” said Keith Kuchler, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Sumo Logic. “With AI exponentially increasing data volumes and costs, that expertise is even more crucial. The next generation of our AI-powered data pipeline solution moves data strategy decisions upstream, empowering teams to determine the purpose of their data so it can effectively be leveraged by responsible AI implementations and also enables them to effectively manage the economics of their data.”
Roadmap and OpenTelemetry Management
The following is the planned future capabilities of Sumo Logic platform:
- Visual Telemetry Optimization: Interactive controls to filter, mold and prepare cloud and edge data before storing them in cloud repositories or Sumo Logic systems.
- Pipeline Routing: The next evolution of pipelines to enable routing of structured telemetry to external third-party applications and security platforms.
- OpenTelemetry (OTel) Management Layer: Inbuilt fleet management capability to manage OpenTelemetry collectors in multi-cloud environment via single control pane.
With the integration of data pipeline controls, telemetry ingestion, investigations and automation into one engine, Sumo Logic plans to simplify SOC and SecOps workflows and decrease infrastructure costs.
