Semiconductor and total system solutions provider Microchip Technology Inc. has announced the expansion of its Power over Ethernet (PoE) portfolio with the launch of the PD-9601GCI midspan. The new industrial-grade, single-port power injector is engineered to meet the high-power requirements of the IEEE 802.3bt standard, allowing operators to deploy smart machinery and connected industrial hardware without modifying their underlying network configurations.
Modern industrial processing facilities and manufacturing plants face intense operational friction during automation upgrades. As industrial Internet of Things (IoT) hardware scales across demanding production floors, retrofitting existing network switches to deliver both high-wattage power and high-speed data typically requires invasive, costly overhauls. Installing traditional dedicated power lines and localized electrical outlets at every remote machine terminal drives up corporate capital expenditures and introduces prolonged system downtime. The commercial introduction of the PD-9601GCI midspan directly eliminates these back-office deployment bottlenecks by functioning as a plug-and-play power injection layer, translating to reduced manual field labor and rapid equipment deployment schedules.
Overcoming Environmental Hazards via Industrial-Grade Hardware Acceleration
Unlike standard commercial-grade indoor network accessories, such as the company’s existing PC-9601GC indoor midspan, this new system is structurally built to withstand the physical stress vectors common to heavy factory floors and exposed outdoor settings. The device injects up to 90W of flexible operating power alongside sustained 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit data transfer rates directly onto a standard single Ethernet cable link.

The hardware architecture incorporates several ruggedized performance safeguards:
-
IP30-Rated Enclosure Protection: Utilizes a sealed, vibration-resistant metal casing designed to insulate the internal microchip circuits from physical impacts and airborne factory debris.
-
Extended Operational Temperature Bounds: Engineered to maintain absolute data integrity across harsh thermal environments ranging from -40°C to 75°C.
-
Dual-Track Power Input Redundancy: Supports dual direct current (DC) inputs across a wide 20V to 60V operating spectrum to ensure continuous runtime.
-
Heavy Industrial Surge Defense: Integrates advanced electrical isolation barriers to insulate downstream smart devices from high-voltage spikes and transient power drops.
-
Flexible Spatial Mounting: Features modular physical mounting provisions, including standard DIN rail, wall, or structured panel installations.
Strategic Alignment and Private-Label Asset Differentiation
The rollout simplifies supply chain logistics for high-volume automation manufacturers and industrial hardware providers. Because the midspan operates as an autonomous power injector placed downstream from the core network switch, equipment vendors can bundle the unit alongside their own IoT hardware to deliver a fully integrated, out-of-the-box installation package to industrial clients.
Furthermore, this operational approach allows system integrators and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to procure the technology under specialized private-label agreements. By establishing an authorized white-label equipment pipeline, manufacturers can immediately differentiate their enterprise product catalogs, providing their industrial customers with a single, highly reliable power ecosystem while eliminating the integration risks associated with unverified third-party power adapters.
“In a market where many existing networks don’t fully support PoE’s convenient single-cable deployment models, our industrial-grade PD-9601GCI midspan makes it easier for our customers to power their smart equipment in factories and industrial settings,” said Charlie Forni, corporate vice president of Microchip‘s networking and connectivity business unit. “Additionally, our customers have the option to use our midspans as a private label powering option, enabling them to differentiate their products by offering a simpler integrated power solution.”
