Microsoft has officially launched Copilot Mode in its Edge browser, marking a significant evolution in how users interact with the web. This new experimental feature redefines the traditional browsing experience by integrating intelligent, AI-powered capabilities directly into the browser, empowering users to navigate the web with enhanced speed, clarity, and context.
“For decades, the way we’ve used browsers has remained linear: open a tab (or 20), search for something, read a page, repeat,” said the Microsoft Edge team. “It’s a model that’s worked well, but it hasn’t fundamentally changed. Until now.”
Copilot Mode is designed to make browsing more intuitive and personalized. With this feature enabled, users gain access to a collaborative AI assistant that not only anticipates their next steps but also declutters the browsing process. The AI actively assists in comparing information, making decisions, and accelerating task completion all while maintaining Microsoft’s industry-leading standards for security, privacy, and performance.

“When you open a new tab in Edge with Copilot Mode on, you’ll see a clean, streamlined page with a single input box that brings together chat, search and web navigation,” the company explained. “Copilot understands your intent and helps you get started faster.”
Available for free, for a limited time, Copilot Mode can now be activated on Microsoft Edge for both Windows and Mac across all Copilot-enabled markets. Users must opt-in to experience this next-generation feature.
“Copilot Mode also sees the full picture across your open tabs, and you can even instruct it to handle some tasks. Turn your browser into a tool that helps you compare, decide and get things done with ease,” Microsoft noted.
Among its innovative capabilities, Copilot Mode offers:
-
Multi-tab Context Awareness: With user permission, Copilot can access all open tabs to provide deeper context and smarter comparisons, such as identifying the best vacation rental across multiple websites based on user-defined preferences.
-
Action-Based AI Commands: Edge now supports natural voice navigation, enabling users to speak directly to Copilot to perform tasks like opening comparison tabs or locating specific information on a page.
-
Seamless Web Integration: Copilot can appear dynamically within any webpage, allowing users to convert units, translate content, or cut through distractions without losing their place.
-
Persistent Task Continuity: Future updates will include AI-driven browsing journeys that help organize past activity into topic-based threads, guiding users on what to explore next all while respecting user privacy and explicit content permissions.
“Imagine simply asking, ‘Find me a paddleboard rental near work,’ and Copilot not only finds the best option, but checks the weather, makes the booking and even suggests sunscreen or tutorial videos to help you prepare,” the company added.
As Microsoft continues to expand the capabilities of Copilot Mode, the focus remains firmly on transparency, user control, and trust. Users will always have the ability to switch back to the classic browsing experience through browser settings.
