Meta has announced a strategic licensing partnership with Midjourney to integrate its advanced AI image and video generation technology into future Meta products. The move was revealed by Alexandr Wang, Meta’s Chief AI Officer, in a Threads post, where he emphasized the company’s multi-pronged approach to AI development.
“To ensure Meta is able to deliver the best possible products for people it will require taking an all-of-the-above approach,” Wang wrote, pointing to the role of top talent, compute resources, and industry collaborations in driving progress.
The partnership comes as Meta intensifies its competition with OpenAI’s Sora, Google’s Veo, and Black Forest Lab’s Flux in the fast-moving generative AI space. Meta has already rolled out Imagine, its AI image generator available across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, and recently launched Movie Gen for text-to-video creation. By teaming up with Midjourney, the company is doubling down on a strategy that combines internal innovation with external partnerships to sharpen its competitive edge.

This deal also reflects Meta’s broader ambitions in AI. Earlier this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg made headlines for offering AI researchers compensation packages exceeding $100 million, while committing $14 billion to Scale AI and acquiring the voice technology startup Play AI. Reports have also surfaced of high-level conversations with Elon Musk regarding his $97 billion bid for OpenAI, underlining the scale of Meta’s aspirations.
Founded in 2022, Midjourney has quickly established itself as a leading force in generative AI. The startup is reportedly on track to hit $200 million in revenue by 2023 and recently launched its video model V1. CEO David Holz confirmed via X that the company remains independent with no outside investors, despite Meta’s past acquisition interest.
With both Meta and Midjourney facing ongoing copyright lawsuits, the licensing agreement marks a pivotal moment in their respective strategies. For Meta, it represents another bold step in consolidating its AI ecosystem. For Midjourney, it secures a major technology partnership while maintaining independence in the increasingly competitive generative AI landscape.
