Private wireless network innovator Betacom announced that its Betacom AirGap Protection™ solution has been selected as the winner of the “WAN Innovation of the Year” award in the seventh annual Mobile Breakthrough Awards program. Mobile Breakthrough is a leading independent market intelligence organization that recognizes the top companies, technologies and products in the global wireless and mobile market today.

The mission of the annual Mobile Breakthrough Awards is to honor excellence and recognize the innovation, hard work and success in a range of mobile and wireless technology categories, including Cloud Computing, Mobile Management, Wireless and Broadband, Mobile Analytics, IoT and Smart City and many more. This year’s program included thousands of nominations from over 15 countries throughout the world.

“Betacom’s new cyber defense enhancements provide multi-layered security to reduce the risk and complexity of adding industrial automation and IoT applications into the enterprise environment,” stated Steve Johansson, managing director, Mobile Breakthrough. “As more companies deploy private wireless networks, there’s also the risk of increased IT attack surfaces. Betacom’s multi-layered approach and AirGap Protection architecture can help alleviate these risks and augment customers’ existing intrusion detection and prevention strategies.”

The Betacom AirGap Protection™ solution provides security for private 5G networks. The network architecture is aimed at enhancing cybersecurity for its flagship offering, Betacom 5G as a Service (5GaaS). AirGap Protection completely isolates private 4G/5G traffic from an enterprise’s existing IT infrastructure and takes a Zero Trust approach to harden each network element – using a combination of traffic segregation, 3GPP tunneling, encryption and granular access controls.

In addition to limiting the impact of malicious activity, AirGap Protection makes it easier to deploy new services without impacting the performance of other enterprise systems. Betacom’s private wireless networks are completely isolated from other IT or public networks. With unique micro-segregation features, customers can define security policies for different nodes and traffic types, rather than deploying a single configuration for the entire system.

AirGap Protection protects against common attacks on traditional networks, as well as cellular vulnerabilities that include man-in-the-middle, stolen credentials, session hijacking, and denial-of-service. If an attack compromises any part of an enterprise network perimeter, AirGap Protection limits the impact from spreading to mission-critical services.

“We designed AirGap Protection to add another layer to our Zero Trust approach by providing greater isolation and control over the devices and data on private 5G networks,” said Johan Bjorklund, CEO of Betacom. “Recognition from Mobile Breakthrough validates our unique approach to protecting customers from increasing cybersecurity threats as they evolve their operations with automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning and real-time data analytics.”

Betacom’s 5GaaS is deployed on premises and owned by the enterprise. Data remains behind the enterprise firewall and never intersects with public networks. Its private 4G/5G networks are monitored by the Betacom Security and Service Operations Center 24×7, 365.
