Elon Musk has revealed that his AI startup, xAI, is developing a new venture called Macrohard, designed to build a “purely AI software company” capable of simulating the operations of industry leaders like Microsoft. Announcing the project on X, Musk said, “It’s a tongue-in-cheek name, but the project is very real!” He added that because companies such as Microsoft do not manufacture physical hardware, their entire business model could theoretically be replicated through artificial intelligence. While Musk withheld additional details and spokespersons for both xAI and Microsoft did not respond to requests for comment, a trademark application filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on August 1 confirmed the Macrohard brand. The filing highlighted a wide range of AI-focused offerings, from software that generates human-like speech and text to applications for designing, coding, running, and playing video games using AI. Brent Mayo, an engineer at xAI, retweeted Musk’s post, and Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, added that Macrohard could theoretically reproduce Microsoft’s “entire operations” from coding to management, also noting that the company is now hiring.

The launch of Macrohard underscores Musk’s deepening push into artificial intelligence and robotics, areas he has increasingly prioritized across his ventures. Beyond xAI, Musk leads Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, The Boring Company, and X Corp, positioning himself at the forefront of innovation in multiple industries. In a 2024 earnings call, he emphasized that Tesla should be seen not only as an automaker but as an “AI robotics company,” pointing to its advancements in robotaxis and humanoid robots. By adding Macrohard to his portfolio, Musk aims to expand AI’s role in enterprise-scale software development and management, further cementing xAI as a key player in his broader strategy to redefine the boundaries of AI-driven businesses and technologies.
