Butterfly Network Inc., a digital health company transforming healthcare with its portable, semiconductor-based ultrasound technology and intuitive software, announced the launch of its third-generation portable point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) system, Butterfly iQ3™, in Europe. Butterfly iQ3 features the Company’s most advanced semiconductor chip, delivering unprecedented image quality and new advanced 3D features: iQ Slice™ and iQ Fan™.

Butterfly iQ3 carries the CE mark, is certified under the EU Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR) and meets all requirements of the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive without invoking the lead exemption required for conventional piezoelectric crystal-based ultrasound devices due to the dangerous levels of lead in their ultrasound transducers.

Joseph DeVivo, President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Butterfly Network, commented: ” After witnessing the great response to Butterfly iQ3 in the US and Canada over the past few months, we have turned our full attention to obtaining marketing approval for this powerful device in Europe. We are confident that the enhanced image quality and groundbreaking features of Butterfly iQ3 will provide significant benefits to healthcare providers across Europe and help them deliver high-quality patient care. We will continue to pursue our overarching goal of democratizing ultrasound and look forward to expanding access to Butterfly iQ3 in other regions as well.”

Outstanding image quality.

Butterfly iQ3 offers the best high-resolution image quality in its class with twice the processing power of Butterfly iQ+ and a new rubber lens without focusing that allows the doctor to intuitively identify the anatomy, observe fine structures and thus make confident diagnostic decisions. In an independent blind study by Intellisurvey, 475 clinicians from more than eight specialties compared the images of the Butterfly iQ3 with those of the GE Vscan Air™ CL. The majority of respondents rated the image quality of the iQ3 higher than that of the GE Vscan Air™ CL in all categories.*

” I had the opportunity to receive a pre-production version of the Butterfly iQ3 and am very impressed with the improvements and benefits to patient care in my practice,” said Dr. Zack Ferguson, Consultant in Acute Internal Medicine at West Middlesex Hospital. “In particular, the improved echo image quality of the new Butterfly iQ3 is a major advancement over previous iQ models, and the biplane mode for cannulation has already proven itself in treating patients with difficult IV access.”

New tools: iQ Slice and iQ Fan.

The Butterfly iQ3 offers two new advanced 3D imaging features that facilitate image acquisition: iQ Slice and iQ Fan. These tools expand on Butterfly’s rich feature set with more than 20 anatomical presets, six imaging modes (B-Mode, M-Mode, Color Doppler, Power Doppler, Pulsed-Wave Doppler and Biplane Imaging™) and a wide selection of AI-powered and advanced imaging tools (including Auto Bladder Volume Capture, Auto B-Line Counter, NeedleViz™ and numerous calculation tools).

  • Butterfly iQ Slice: The world’s first automated, sequential ultrasound acquisition mode in a handheld device based on Butterfly’s proprietary Ultrasound-on-Chip™ technology. iQ Slice provides automatic beam steering to scan organs and acquire up to 46 ultrasound slices simultaneously at a wide angle. The imaging mode is designed to obtain excellent images even easier and faster without demanding maneuvering. These files can either be read and interpreted immediately at the bedside by experienced operators or sent to a specialist for further review – just like a CT or MRI.
  • Butterfly iQ Fan: A dedicated lung tool that builds on iQ Slice’s core technology and allows healthcare professionals to take advantage of real-time virtual fanning, making it easier to visualize A-lines and other lung pathologies. With iQ Fan, the user can use Butterfly’s beam steering to reduce motion to capture information and make informed clinical decisions.
The new form of ultrasound – more comfort and efficiency.

Butterfly iQ3 offers a new user-friendly and ergonomic design that is smaller, lighter, better distributed and powered by an even more powerful battery:

  • The 17% reduction in probe area improves intercostal access for cardiac and lung imaging as well as vascular access.
  • A 7% shorter probe with ergonomic weight distribution reduces physical strain on the operator and contributes to better control and maneuverability for more precise and comfortable scans.
  • Three configurable control buttons can be assigned to the functions required and promote user-friendly, seamless navigation, fast scans and interpretations to save valuable time during diagnosis.
  • A charging time 2.5 times shorter than the Butterfly iQ+ and up to 2 hours of thermal operating time enable continuous scanning.

Dr. John Martin, Chief Medical Officer at Butterfly Network, said: ” We are delighted that the response from customers matches our enthusiasm for this remarkable advancement. Our customers have expressed their desire for higher resolution, and we have met this with exceptional image quality, a smaller, more ergonomic design and improved performance. The iQ3 is ready to use out of the box, has a long battery life and fits comfortably in the hand. We are proud to introduce our latest solution in Europe, which meets the high demands of demanding users while being accessible to those new to ultrasound – and at an unprecedented low price.”
