In a definitive consolidation of the modern data stack, critical AI and data automation software provider Prefect has announced its acquisition of Dagster Labs, uniting the two primary modern successors to Apache Airflow under a single roof. The transaction brings together their respective open-source communities and combined enterprise capabilities, providing thousands of global data engineering teams with a comprehensive platform to automate data pipelines, machine learning operations, and emerging AI agentic infrastructure. Financially backed by Prefect’s year-long operational profitability, both Prefect and Dagster will continue to receive long-term independent technical support, maintaining their respective open-source roadmaps, naming conventions, and pricing structures.

Strategic integration efforts will focus on a full-stack approach to agentic automation by merging Prefect’s runtime execution and FastMCP agentic governance protocol with Dagster’s asset-based, declarative outcome tracking model. Highlighting the market alignment, “For years, Prefect and Dagster raised the bar for each other, and as a result, we built two of the most popular tools in the data ecosystem,” said Jeremiah Lowin, founder and CEO of Prefect. “Together, we’re consolidating the category around our shared vision while also building the best foundation for the next generation of AI automation.” Ultimately, this milestone acquisition ensures that former market alternatives will now operate in tandem, addressing critical enterprise needs for flexible runtime execution alongside rigorous data tracking in a fast-evolving AI ecosystem.
