Boomi Signals Future of Agentic Enterprise with Intent to Acquire AI Gateway Pioneer Lunar.dev

Related stories

Boomi, the leading data activation company for AI, has announced its intent to acquire Lunar.dev, a move designed to institutionalize governed agent connectivity across the global enterprise. This strategic acquisition aims to integrate Lunar.dev’s cutting-edge AI and Model Context Protocol (MCP) gateway capabilities into the Boomi Enterprise Platform, providing organizations with a definitive control plane for AI scaling.

With the shift in focus from AI pilots to production within the industry, the issue now lies in dealing with the enormous amount of traffic among agents, LLMs, and corporate data. The problem is solved through the implementation of Lunar.dev, which acts as a gateway that facilitates controlled access based on policy rules.

Bridging the Gap Between Pilot and Production

With the inclusion of Lunar.dev within the Boomi portfolio, there would be a two-tiered approach to controlling AI behavior, which will be both central and decentralized, ensuring that the use of AI is not controlled but governed by IT executives in such a way that they can drive innovation.

Steve Lucas, Chairman and CEO of Boomi, underscored the strategic importance of the deal: “At Boomi, we see a clear shift from AI experimentation to real-world deployment. Our intent to acquire Lunar.dev is focused on one priority: giving customers control over every interaction between AI, data, and applications. That’s essential to building trust and scaling AI with confidence.”

Expanding the Boomi Connect Ecosystem

Lunar.dev is slated to become a cornerstone of “Boomi Connect.” This expansion will bolster Boomi’s ability to facilitate governed connectivity between leading AI tools such as Claude, Copilot, and Gemini and more than 1,000 managed enterprise applications.

By pairing Lunar.dev’s gateway with the Boomi MCP Registry, companies gain a unified foundation for discovering and managing AI services through a centralized catalog. This architecture is purpose-built for the “agentic enterprise,” where AI is no longer a peripheral tool but a core operational component.

Lucas further elaborated on this vision: “This is about helping customers turn AI into a trusted, operational capability. With governance embedded at every layer, organizations can move faster while staying in control.”

Market Impact and Economic Efficiency

The acquisition also addresses the growing economic complexity of AI. Lunar.dev’s intelligent model and prompt routing allow businesses to optimize their AI spend by directing requests to the most cost-effective and capable models.

Speaking during his Boomi World keynote, Steve Lucas touched on the shifting landscape of model economics: “A crazy idea is that you keep your data, you still get those benefits, and you help build your own business. The future of work looks like models. Frontier models, brilliant. They’re going to get better. There are prompts and responses that get routed back and forth to computers, phones, through APIs and agents. We know that we’ve already figured this out. Now it’s not just about these public frontier models that exist. Here’s what I know is this is happening in real time.”

He concluded by highlighting the inevitable shift toward high-ROI infrastructure: “In the end, open weight models win. They cost money to run from a compute standpoint, but they are profoundly less expensive. Do we continue to pay every year 10 times what we did last year for a proprietary frontier model? Or do we start to do what enterprises always do, which is pursue the lowest economic option with the highest rate of return economics? ROI always wins. It will profoundly supersede AI at all times.”
