In a move set to redefine industrial intelligence, Rockwell Automation, Inc. has announced integration of the NVIDIA Nemotron Nano small-language model into its edge-based applications, enabling real-time generative AI that runs on devices across design, development, production and maintenance workflows. The collaboration with NVIDIA Corporation leverages open-source Nemotron models fine-tuned with Rockwell’s own data from FactoryTalk® Design Studio™ and other product workflows allowing deployments on HMI panels, appliances, desktops, servers or private clouds, even in air-gapped or bandwidth-limited environments. Rockwell says the model’s reasoning power, predictability and responsiveness represent a “step changes” in small-language model capability for industrial edge scenarios where instant insight and data security are critical.

As Tony Carrara, FactoryTalk Design Studio business manager at Rockwell Automation, explains: “Industrial automation demands AI that works reliably at the edge and in secure environments… By fine-tuning the open NVIDIA Nemotron model with FactoryTalk Design Studio data, we’re creating solutions that can be deployed anywhere to help our customers accelerate workflows without compromising predictability or control.” Meanwhile, Joey Conway, senior director, generative AI software for enterprise at NVIDIA, adds: “Small language models like NVIDIA Nemotron Nano bring real-time intelligence to where decisions are made from factory floors to power grids… With NVIDIA Nemotron Nano, enterprises using Rockwell FactoryTalk Design Studio can deploy AI in environments with limited space and power, extending AI from data centers into the heart of real-world operations.” The innovation will be showcased at Automation Fair 2025 (taking place November 17-20 in Chicago) as Rockwell demonstrates how generative AI at the edge is reshaping industrial operations.
