Thales now offers password-less fingerprint authentication for businesses

Thales

Thales, the world’s leading provider of technology and security, announced the launch of the SafeNet IDPrime FIDO biometric smart card. Security keys designed to provide enterprises with strong multi-factor authentication (MFA). This new contactless smart card allows users to use their fingerprints instead of passwords to quickly and securely access corporate devices, applications and cloud services.

According to the 2023 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) , the three main ways attackers gain access to organizations are by stealing credentials, phishing, and exploiting vulnerabilities. In fact, 49% of data breaches involve stolen credentials. These threats are top of mind for organizations moving to the cloud, and many enterprises are grappling with low user adoption of MFA, which is often considered cumbersome.

SafeNet IDPrime FIDO biometric smart cards help end users adopt passwordless MFA, allowing them to easily enroll and authenticate using biometric technology. Users can use the sensor on the card to access the card using their fingerprint instead of a password. The smart card also supports contactless functionality, allowing users to tap the card on any NFC-enabled device. For businesses, the smart cards offer multiple benefits, including faster, more secure and more convenient access than traditional password-based ones.

With these security keys, users get strong protection against account takeovers and phishing on corporate devices. The user’s biometric data is securely stored in the built-in chip so that the data does not leave the card, thus ensuring a high degree of data privacy. The solution works with all digital resources supporting the FIDO2 standard, including Windows, Mac, Linux, and more.

Thales is the market leader in biometrics and its contactless biometric payment cards have proven successful in a highly regulated industry. The launch of the SafeNet IDPrime FIDO biometric smart card further expands its existing FIDO security key product portfolio, allowing it to now provide enterprise customers with equally secure biometric capabilities.

Danny de Vreeze, Vice President of Identity and Access Management at Thales, said: “With the shift to remote working and the growth of cloud technologies, the attack surface for many organizations continues to expand, and the human element remains a challenging pain point for modern enterprises. Adopting MFA has been a common barrier to security as many users find it cumbersome and choose to bypass it. The SafeNet IDPrime FIDO biometric smart card helps solve this challenge by introducing a physical form factor to enhance security while also providing A fast, seamless user experience. Complementing a strong portfolio of FIDO-enabled security keys and solutions, this product provides the most advanced anti-phishing authentication.”
