Innovative design with Eaton’s power management technologies to support the high power density requirements of AI data centers
Power management company Eaton announced the launch of a new reference architecture designed to accelerate the transition to 800V DC power in artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Eaton has developed a new design that supports the 800V DC architecture announced by NVIDIA . By leveraging innovative power management technologies, Eaton protects and optimizes the infrastructure of modern AI data centers. The solution marks a milestone in Eaton’s grid-to-chip strategy to reliably meet the growing power demands of the AI era.
The increasing energy demands of data centers driven by increasingly complex AI workloads are increasingly pushing existing capacity limits to their breaking point. NVIDIA is working with leading partners in power, silicon technology, and data center infrastructure to accelerate the adoption of 800 VDC solutions and set new standards in scalability and energy efficiency for AI factories. These next-generation systems, which offer an integrated power distribution and storage solution, are optimally designed to meet the energy demands of modern AI factories, delivering rack-level power in the megawatt range – safely, efficiently, and with minimal material and infrastructure costs.
The reference design combines Eaton’s proprietary power management solutions with NVIDIA’s AI infrastructure. The design includes supercapacitors for rapid backup power, ORV3-format busbars for power distribution, a hot aisle containment system to support the busbars and cable trays, and DC connectors.
“The introduction of 800 VDC architectures is a critical advance in data center innovation, opening up new possibilities for scalable and energy-optimized AI computing,” said JP Buzzell, Vice President and Chief Architect for Data Centers at Eaton. “We are proud to deepen our collaboration with NVIDIA through the launch of this new project. This is an important step in the implementation of our grid-to-chip strategy, helping to accelerate the transition to the AI factory of the future.”

Eaton’s grid-to-chip strategy is a comprehensive approach to intelligent solutions across the entire power chain of AI data centers, including power distribution, backup power, and digital technologies. In line with this strategy, Eaton is collaborating with Siemens Energy to build modular data centers with integrated on-site power generation. Another innovation is an edge-based solution for detecting and proactively mitigating AI-related power spikes in data centers.
“The optimized 800 VDC architectures enable AI infrastructure to meet increasing power density requirements while maximizing energy efficiency,” says Dion Harris, senior director of HPC, Cloud, and AI infrastructure at NVIDIA. “Projects like these pave the way for high-density data centers in the age of artificial intelligence.”
