Transforming Customer Service, Streamlining Operations, and Setting New Standards in AI Development

Mercado Libre, Latin America’s largest e-commerce and fintech company, continues to lead innovation with the introduction of Verdi, a cutting-edge AI developer platform powered by GPT-4o. This new platform represents a significant milestone in the company’s journey toward leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance operations, streamline customer service, and drive efficiency across its expansive ecosystem.

AI-Powered Transformation

With over 25 years of growth and now recognized as the most valuable company in Latin America, Mercado Libre has consistently harnessed the power of AI to stay ahead in the competitive e-commerce space. Verdi, their latest AI initiative, takes AI implementation to a new level, offering developers a robust platform to build large language model (LLM)-based applications, backed by OpenAI’s GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, and GPT-3.5 Turbo.

Key AI-driven advancements made by Mercado Libre in recent years include:

Introducing Verdi: A New Era for AI Development

Verdi is more than just an AI platform; it represents a breakthrough in how Mercado Libre approaches complex operational tasks, particularly in customer service. The platform allows Mercado Libre’s 17,000 developers to build and manage AI-driven applications with ease, simplifying processes, improving security, and enhancing productivity across 30,000 microservices.

One of Verdi’s first major use cases is in customer service mediation, traditionally a time-consuming process. With Verdi, Mercado Libre has automated 10% of customer service mediation, handling disputes between buyers and sellers without human intervention. This capability is projected to eventually support tasks that would otherwise require 9,000 human operators, managing decisions involving $450 million annually.

“Verdi changes the game,” said Daniel Rabinovich, Mercado Libre’s COO. “It’s more than just improving efficiency—it allows AI to autonomously handle high-stakes tasks, with humans acting as co-pilots.”

Built for Security, Scale, and Simplicity

Verdi’s design centers on security and scalability, offering a comprehensive solution capable of handling complex, multi-faceted tasks autonomously. Unlike traditional development platforms, Verdi’s interactions are primarily driven by natural language, eliminating the need for developers to view source code. Built-in security protocols and routing logic ensure safe and efficient AI application development.

Sebastian Barrios, SVP of Technology at Mercado Libre, highlighted the platform’s ability to support rapid iteration without compromising on security or scale: “We designed Verdi with GPT-4 to reduce cognitive load for developers, allowing them to iterate, develop, and deploy AI solutions faster and more securely.”

Verdi operates within Mercado Libre’s internal developer platform, enabling seamless integration with existing systems. It supports developers in building AI-driven applications by offering a neural network-like framework that connects various AI capabilities, including GPT-4o’s multi-modal features. For instance, Verdi can interpret diverse data types, such as images and product returns, all autonomously.

The Future of Verdi

Beyond its current role in customer service, Verdi is poised to revolutionize other aspects of Mercado Libre’s operations, including logistics. Plans are underway to deploy Verdi to speed up shipping processes and reduce delivery delays. Additionally, the platform will soon incorporate more advanced AI capabilities like intelligent search assistants and personalized product recommendations for Mercado Pago’s 50 million quarterly active users.

“Verdi is designed to solve any challenge,” said Rabinovich. “Its potential is limitless, from resolving routine queries to managing high-stakes disputes. With Verdi, we are setting a new standard in AI-powered operations.”
