Google Announces Gemini CLI GitHub Actions in Public Beta

Google

Google announced the launch of Gemini CLI GitHub Actions, a no‑cost AI coding teammate designed to automate routine development tasks within GitHub repositories. The tool is now available in public beta and ready for global use via the google‑github‑actions/run‑gemini‑cli repository.

This new integration builds on the open‑source Gemini CLI introduced in June, bringing AI‑powered automation to team workflows. Initially created by Google’s own developers to handle feature requests and contributions in the Gemini CLI repository, Gemini CLI GitHub Actions was made available to the broader community at their request.

AI Teammate for GitHub Repositories

Gemini CLI GitHub Actions serves both as an autonomous agent for essential coding workflows and as an on‑demand collaborator that developers can delegate tasks to.

It launches with three open‑source, customizable workflows:

“Gemini CLI GitHub Actions is a no‑cost, powerful AI coding teammate for your repository,” said Google. “It acts both as an autonomous agent for critical routine coding tasks and an on‑demand collaborator you can quickly delegate work to.”

Enterprise‑Grade Security and Control

Designed with robust security features, Gemini CLI GitHub Actions accommodates teams using Google AI Studio, Vertex AI, or Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise editions:

Gemini CLI GitHub Actions is available today in public beta under an Apache‑2.0 open source license. Developers can begin using the tool by installing Gemini CLI v0.1.18 or later, and running the /setup‑github command inside their repository. The GitHub Action supports usage free of charge via Google AI Studio API keys; Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise usage tiers are also supported.

Gemini CLI is an open‑source AI agent that empowers developers with direct access to Google’s Gemini models particularly Gemini 2.5 Pro with up to 1 million token context. Launched in June 2025, Gemini CLI enhances productivity across coding, debugging, content generation, research, and task management. It integrates seamlessly with Gemini Code Assist for cross‑platform support in both terminal and IDE environments
